Adventures of an EPICS Intern: Intern Tells All

When I was in high school, I read an article in Seventeen magazine that claimed to reveal what internships were really like.  In the article a college senior recounted her stressful three-month stint at a major publication. She revealed three key tenets that you should guide you during your first internship. First, you absolutely need to know how to make coffee. If your boss asks for it and you don’t know how to make it (like the author) you’ll look like an idiot. Second, get in before your boss and don’t you dare leave before they do. The author made the mistake of taking off before her boss on a Friday and paid the price Monday morning in front of the entire office. Finally, she advised all interns to never speak unless spoken to.

The former intern told a cringe-worthy story about being reprimanded for contributing to a brainstorming session and was told never to speak in a meeting again. Throughout the course of this 500-word story, I went from having no idea of what an internship was, to dreading having to enter the workforce.

Nearly seven years later on my first day at Rise Interactive, a digital marketing agency in Chicago, this article was just about the only thing I could think about. I walked in expecting to sit quietly in the corner for the next ten hours while secretly trying to Google how to make coffee on my phone. Luckily, I found my internship completely contrary to the article’s advice.

Most importantly, I found her last piece of advice is the most untrue. I quickly learned Rise didn’t hire me because they needed an extra piece of office furniture or because they needed a skilled note taker. I was brought on to help add value to the organization, just like any other employee. Since I started as a Marketing Communications Intern in April, I have written for the company blog, designed images for social media campaigns, and contributed to multiple brainstorms. I think most people go into internships expecting a Devil Wears Prada type situation. We all assume the worst because there are so many negative images of internships in the media. The good news is that in my experience, companies value their interns. I continued to be pleasantly surprised by the respect and responsibilities I received at Rise. For all the other students who dread bearing the six-letter title, just remember to follow the opposite advice from the Seventeen article I read many years ago:

  1. The only coffee you’ll ever need to know how to make is your own.
  2. There’s a difference between going above and beyond for your boss and people asking too much of you.
  3.  Remember they hired you for a reason and add value wherever you can.

Even though I’m young and have many more jobs ahead of me, I know I will remember these three lessons and the people who taught them to me, for years to come.

Emily Ryles is a rising senior majoring in Radio/Television/Film. She is interning with Rise Interactive a Chicago Digital Marketing Firm.
