Film Festival Round-Up January 2016

FilmFestival Round Up

Film Festivals Sent Our Way This Month!

Sight of Sound International Film Competition

Deadline: March 10th, 2016

Sight of Sound is an annual film and music program presented by the Dallas Chamber Symphony. Sight of Sound is unlike all other film events out there, because it challenges filmmakers to create short, silent films that are set to, and inspired by, a piece of classical music (much like Disney’s Fantasia, yet inclusive of live-action films), and screens films with live orchestra. The project is sponsored in part by the Video Association of Dallas.

Filmmakers may either submit a film for accompaniment with one of the competition’s pre-approved music selections, or submit a wild card entry to a piece of their choosing. Films can be narrative, abstract, animation, live action, etc., as a diverse variety of formats and interpretations are welcome. The most successful entries tend to be those films that are three to ten minutes in duration and which exhibit a strong interplay between sound and picture. The one main rule of the competition is: no sound except the classical soundtrack.

Finalists receive a concert screening at Dallas City Performance Hall in April of 2016, with the orchestra performing the soundtrack live-to-film on stage. After the debut concert, both Semifinalists and Finalists are given complimentary license to use and distribute the orchestra’s professional musical recording, dubbed to their films, across all motion media, worldwide in perpetuity.

Finalists are eligible to receive a $500 Audience Choice Award (selected by audience members via text), as well as a $500 Best Picture Award, to be determined by a jury of filmmakers.

For more information, please visit www.sightofsound.org. Entries are accepted through the Sight of Sound website and FilmFreeway.

EPICS Career Corner! Preparing for a Career Fair

XR4A5239XR4A5430

Attending a career fair is one of the many strategies you can use to find a job or internship. One of the main benefits of career fairs is having the opportunity to meet employers face to face. In some instances, employers use the fair to fill interview slots and/or positions. Additionally, students who are still exploring opportunities can use career fairs to conduct research on career paths, companies, and jobs.

Whether you’re a job seeker or still deciding, it’s important that you prepare in order to get most out of the event.

In the weeks approaching the fair:

  • Create a short list of companies and do research
  • Practice your elevator pitch
  • Create a list of questions that can’t be answered by looking at the company website

On the day of the career fair:

  • Dress professionally and wear comfortable shoes
  • Arrive early and develop a game plan
  • Bring something to hold what you collect and don’t pick up too many freebies
  • Be patient and observant – pay attention what you say while standing in line and listen to other conversations with recruiters
  • Collect contact information if possible
  • Ask questions and take notes

Of course, your work isn’t over when the career fair ends. Make sure to:

  • Send thank you notes and follow up on any leads
  • Apply what you learned to your job search

Here are a few articles from Business Insider, US News, and Quint Careers that can provide additional information on how to prepare for a career fair.

Written by EPICS Assistant Director Funmi Ojikutu, who serves as the main point of contact for all SoC undergraduate programs.
