The 2012-13 academic year off to a great start!
As Director of the Program in Media, Technology and Society, I couldn’t be more pleased by the start of the current academic year. Six new faculty members (Jeremy Birnholtz, Aymar Jean Christian, Amy Lu, Anne-Marie Piper, Aaron Shaw and Michelle Shumate) have come to Northwestern and joined the program. You can read more about them on our faculty page. In addition, after a very successful recruiting season, we’re delighted that Drew Cingel, Lisa Hurwitz, Jennifer Ihm, Ivory Mills, Behzod Sirjani, Cindy Weng and Lillian Yi have entered our doctoral program. Last but not least, we recently hosted InfoSocial: Where Information and the Social Sciences Collide, the inaugural graduate student conference in media, technology and society. After receiving more than 100 submissions from almost 60 programs from around the world back in the spring, the student organizing committee selected less than half of them for presentation. As a result, this past weekend 128 registered participants enjoyed six wonderful panels and poster session by promising young scholars, and a rousing keynote by Ron Burt, in a vibrant and collegial atmosphere. A most auspicious start for what is shaping up to become a landmark year in the program!
