2017 Summer Research Opportunities

Now is the time to get a jump on planning for summer activities that will pan out in the heat of June, July, and August.

Here’s a suggestion: in the next couple of weeks, come up with three ideas for how you want to spend your summer 2017.  Consider activities that would further your interests and prepare you more effectively for research-related careers.

Maybe you’d like a $3,500 stipend to investigate an area in more depth, anything from  exploring Shakespearean stagecraft in London (!), to researching the cellular basis for heart disease in a leading lab.  If you can find a faculty mentor for the project and you’re not graduating before the end of fall quarter 2017, you should start NOW on preparing ideas for an Undergraduate Research Grant proposal.  The proposals are due Friday, March 10th, 2017 but it typically takes several drafts to come up with a fundable proposal, and you will get crucially helpful feedback if you contact the Office of Undergraduate Research SOON about what you have in mind.  Early birds definitely enjoy an edge in winning these competitive awards.  Get started at http://undergradresearch.northwestern.edu/summerurg.

Not ready for a semi-autonomous project but know a faculty member whose research/creative projects you would love to work on?  Contact them soon to see if they are willing to mentor you and whether they might be willing to prepare an Undergraduate Research Assistant proposal that would provide a summer salary for you to work with them.  Here’s the link: http://undergradresearch.northwestern.edu/urap.  The deadline for faculty to submit summer Undergraduate Research Assistant proposals is Sunday, April 23rd, 2017.

Summer internships might be your priority and if so, explore the possibilities through the SoC EPICS program in SoConnect, particularly the upcoming SoC Internship Program Info Session on Monday, January 30th, 2017 at 6 PM in Annie May Swift Auditorium.  More information is at this link: https://www.communication.northwestern.edu/epics/undergrads

Anyway, now’s the time to get a jump on these summer activities.  Think about exciting times ahead and hot summer weather though it’s cold out now.
